“Our Founder said that The Salvation Army will never be better than its officers, but I dare to suggest a revision of his comment and say The Salvation Army will never be better than its leaders. Of course the Army will be as effective as we allow the Holy Spirit to make it. But his purposes are most often achieved when his people are led by Spirit-filled leaders, Spirit-gifted leaders. The latent leadership of the Army needs to be recognized, liberated, developed and trained. The earlier it is identified the better. The gift must have opportunity to grow, even if arrogance is a major danger among the gifted… The word leader should always be associated with the word servant in our vocabulary. We need to stress that a leader-gift is not better than others; it is only different. The gifts of the peacemaker, of the encourager, the sympathizer, the teacher, the healer, are just as precious. The commissioner is not better than the captain. They need each to be placed where their gifts can be exploited, that’s all. A be-ranked Salvationist needs to keep close to the Army’s master, who insisted that, in his Kingdom, the first shall be last.”
